Why the Hong Kong VCD cover archive?
While the VCD format is
derided by many (including me in the past), it's a really important
format for Hong Kong movie fans. Many movies from HK have only ever been
released on the VCD format, and most of those are unlikely to be
released again anytime soon if ever, therefore VCD as a format, in spite
all it's failings, becomes important by default. I want there to be a record, not of the films themselves (we have the HKMDB for
that), but the fact that at one time these films were available! That was the
original thinking, but then I thought why limit it to just those titles?
So now any HK VCD is welcome, the more the merrier. Think of it as a way of revisiting and
celebrating the golden era of HK cinema via the video format that rose
to prominence during those halcyon days.
To start with this page
will be an archive of my own HK VCD covers, but I'd like it to grow and
become a real resource for the Hong Kong film fan. In order to do that I
will need contributions from as many VCD junkies as possible. Please,
please get in touch if you can contribute.
Good on ya, mate! I have a fondness of video-cd's as well. Despite their lower picture quality I find them pretty cool to collect and as you said often you need them in order to get a rare film - or an alternative cut or (in the case of Celestial releases) the original non altered audio.
ReplyDeleteMaybe consider adding specs to the posts such as aspect ratio, audio dubs, alternative prints, cut status if known
Thanks Jack, I shall certainly be mentioning alternate cuts and the like where possible. I have Bullet In The Head ready to go and have added a little info to that.
